Again, Self-Defense?!

While reading “Porch killing defendant: ‘I wasn’t going to cower’ ” (AP ¬†Monday, August 4th 2014), I was reminded of Trayvon Martin – before the article mentions him.

Both cases call on self-defense, personally I just see stupidity! The guy, who killed Trayvon Martin, called the police but then ignored what they said. This one didn’t even bother calling the police, he just went ahead and killed an unarmed 19-year-old woman (because she was drunk).

This guy said that he feared for his life – apparently because she was banging on the doors and he thought that there may be others. So what does he do – he opens the door (does this remind you of bad horror films where everyone watching is saying/thinking – don’t open the door).

The police have been trained to deal with such situations, let them deal with it. At least one young woman and one teenager would still be alive. But alas, self-defense and stupidity rule this day!

Boys Will Be Boys !?!

I just read “Village protests rape, killings of Indian sisters” Thursday May 29th 2014 AP.

I applaud their protest for action. Then at the end of the article, I read the following:
“Last month, the head of Uttar Pradesh state’s governing party, […], told an election rally that the party was opposed to the law calling for gang rapists to be executed.
“Boys will be boys,” Mulayam Singh Yadav said. “They make mistakes.””

Boys will be boys !?! What @#*@ nonsense is that?! Looking in your sister’s diary or playing in a mud puddle is ‘boys will be boys’! Gang rape is a whole new level!

20 Years!

“Nevada rancher defends remarks, loses supporters” April 25, 2014 AP (1)
“Nevada rancher had limited sympathy in the West” Friday April 25th, 2014 AP (2)
I also just watched a video in which his ‘African-American’ bodyguard defended Clive Bundy’s remarks. (3)

The bodyguard, Jayson Bullock, is an Army veteran who believes that we have an oppressive government.(3) He does not really answer if he thought this during or after serving, my question would be – then why serve in the Army?

“In a statement Friday, Bundy defended himself by saying he is “trying to keep Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream alive.” […] “I might not have said it right,” he said, “but it came from my heart.”(2)
So, he is a racist “from [his] heart”!

I can’t believe that Bundy has the gall to defend slavery. “He said he wondered if they were “better off as slaves” than “under government subsidy.”(1)
One’s income somewhat dictates things, but under slavery everything was dictated. And he talks about ‘broken families’, how many families were split up under slavery?

Before his ignorant racist comments, my first thought was 20 years! It took 20 years before anything was done. I agree with the other ranchers, he is a deadbeat.(2)

Now we know that he is a racist deadbeat!!

The Next Big Spill !?!

On Smithsonian.com, I read the article “Breaking Down the Myths and Misconceptions About the Gulf Oil Spill” (http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/clarifying-myths-and-misconceptions-about-gulf-oil-spill-180951136/#IrmyQi8cDebHg6Pc.99).

It presents many aspects of the oil spill, plus how the gulf may naturally deal with the oil. It presents a very balanced view of problems and non-problems. However, they cannot tell if there will be long-term effects.

My big problem with this article is how it ends. “We shouldn’t assume that all negative events in the Gulf since April 2010 were the fault of the spill. This not only obscures other potential problems, but also keeps us from fully understanding the impacts of oil spills. Without this understanding, we’ll be ill prepared for the next big spill.”(emphasis mine) As they admit “[w]e still don’t know the long-term effects of the spill”, yet they are preparing for “the next big spill”.

Here’s an idea – how about NOT DRILLING!

Peace, Or Else !?!

I came to the final thoughts in “Ukraine insurgents reject call to quit buildings” (April 18th, 2014 AP). “86-year-old Yuri Kovalchuk said “Peace will only prevail when the Kremlin will bring in its troops.””

So, in order to have peace, the military/weapons need to be brought in.

There is definitely something twisted in that reasoning!

The Same Thing

“”Most people, regardless of which language is their first language, regardless of where they were born, nonetheless feel some kind of an attachment to the place where they live,” [Catherine Wanner, professor of history, anthropology and religious studies at Penn State University] said.” From “Conflict with Russia galvanizes Ukraine’s identity” Sunday, March 30th 2014 AP

She is talking about Ukraine, but it made me immediately think of the book I read (Imprisoned by Martin W. Sandler) about the ‘Japanese-American’ internments/imprisonments which I talked about in my post of March 23, 2014 (_-Americans).

This is the point which the people calling for the ‘internments’ were missing. They should have looked for the few, if any, who did not consider the U.S. to be their new home. Instead they went for wholesale ‘ethnic cleansing’. That was definitely a ‘slippery slope’ to begin, as everyone later found out!

Another Scary Situation

I just read “Thousands of Muslims stuck in C. African Republic” Saturday, March 29th, 2014 AP. It is about Muslims who are stuck in a single neighborhood by Christian militiamen. The Christians say that they want the Muslims to leave; but if the Muslims set foot out of the ‘area’, they risk being killed.

This is one reason why I hate ‘organized religion’. The so-called Christians don’t want the Muslims gone, they want them dead. What happened to “Thou Shalt Not Kill”?

Tar Sands Oil – Scary!

I received an email from the LCV  (League of Conservation Voters) and just the first paragraph was scary!

“On Monday, a spill of dirty tar sands oil from a BP refinery in Indiana left a disgusting sheen on the surface of Lake Michigan — the drinking water source for upwards of 7 million people in the area. It’s the fourth oil spill to happen in the last two weeks. Altogether, they’ve unleashed nearly a quarter million gallons of toxic oil into ecosystems in the U.S”

The administration, etc. have not figured out yet that Keystone XL, Arctic drilling, etc. are just major accidents waiting to happen!

Speechless

I received an email from The PEW Charitable Trusts which says “25 Years After Valdez Spill, Drilling Standards Still Needed”. Personally, I think NO DRILLING is needed.

There was a link to an article – “Deepwater Horizon oil left tuna, other species with heart defects likely to prove fatal” washingtonpost.com March 24 (2014, I assume)
In the article, ‘Nat Scholz, leader of the ecotoxicology program at NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle (talking about amberjack, yellowfin and bluefin tuna) said “They’re not going to be able to survive” as they develop into adult fish.’
The part that left me speechless (except for random expletives) was: “The oil giant [BP] filed a lawsuit in a Texas court last August, arguing it had been sufficiently punished for the spill.” Sufficiently punished !?!

Then I saw a link at the bottom of the article – “Court rejects BP appeal over gulf oil spill payouts”. They ruin the environment and people’s livelihoods then don’t want to pay.
From that article, “BP is trying to limit the cost of the settlement reached in late 2012.” Oh, boo hoo, cry me a river!

But the best was this other link that I saw. “Two years after BP oil spill, offshore drilling still poses risks” – REALLY!?!

More Waste

I just received another request for a donation. It included address labels. Besides the fact that I cannot afford to donate and I am ‘swimming’ in address labels, who really needs/uses address labels with online bill pay, email, and texting? In addition to this reasoning (waste of natural resources), my main complaint is that if they have money to waste on manufacturing address labels, stickers, etc. – how about spending that money on the cause that they are raising money for!?!
