Groundhog Day

I had borrowed the Groundhog Day video from the library in order to refresh my memory of it. But I just could not watch it, my main memory (I watched it a long time ago) was that I never wanted to watch it again.
Speaking of Groundhog Day (i.e. the actual day), I really don’t get it. We celebrate a rodent coming out of its den. The worst thing, if you celebrate in Punxsutawney, PA, is that it is usually very cold (“Temperatures were near freezing when he emerged at dawn – unseasonably warm … The average early morning temperature usually hovers around 17 degrees”-AP 2/2/12).
The accuracy of the prediction rate is debated, but it looks like low wins out. “Groundhog Day proponents state that the rodents’ forecasts are accurate 75% to 90% of the time. A Canadian study for 13 cities in the past 30 to 40 years puts the success rate level at 37%. Also, the National Climatic Data Center reportedly has stated that the overall prediction accuracy rate is around 39%.”-Wikipedia
“[T]ens of thousands of visitors from around the nation and even the world com[e] to Punxsutawney”-AP 2/2/12 to stand in the cold and watch a rodent come out of its den and probably predict wrong. What gives?
Favorite fact I learned = they are also called whistle pigs
